The sound of silence
Hello there! It’s going to be a short one today because I have about 10 minutes to get back downstairs to help with the kiddos. I’m trying to blog every day, but man it’s tough on weekends (you know, 3 and 5-year-old kids who can’t entertain themselves for more than 15 minutes). So anyway, I’m noticing that I’m struggling the most with silence today. I was home for a few minutes while my youngest was napping and oldest was out scootering (scooting?) with my husband. I had such a huge desire to turn on the TV just to block out the silence. But why do I dislike it so much? Is it something most people dislike? Maybe we’re programmed to prefer background noise from the womb since there’s all that ambient noise going on in there. Who knows!
The thing is, I want to get better with silence. I want to actually appreciate the absence of noise and the lack of sensory stimulation. Oh my god, I just realized why I’ve always had trouble sticking with a daily meditation practice! I hated the silence! Wow, just made that connection. If meditation is done in silence, there must be something powerful about it. So for my challenge tomorrow, I’m going to sit in silence for 10 minutes. Not walking, not doing anything but being alone with myself in a very quiet space. Yikes, that already sounds quite dreadful.
